The One Take Wonder Film Challenge
After the huge success of our two previous competitions, o-region is back with another exciting film challenge in 2006.
This year our competition is called the One Take Wonder Film Challenge. As ever, the rules are pretty simple. We'll accept films of any style or subject
- the only rules are that this year's films have to be made in one continuous take and last no longer than ninety seconds. That means no editing or cuts
of any kind can be used within the film - all the action has to happen in a single unbroken shot.
We don't mind if you make the films on your mobile phone, on your home camcorder or with a full Steadicam rig, just as long as it's all done in one take.
You could do the whole thing in a super-complex tracking shot or with a single fixed camera. You could choreograph the whole scene beforehand and film it
in one go, or just improvise it and see what comes out at the end. As always, we're looking for bold, experimental and imaginative films that really push
the boundaries and show a clear, cohesive idea. Think about how you can use the format and the competition rules to your advantage, rather than viewing
them as a limitation. Most importantly of all, figure out why your idea suits being filmed in a single take - if it would be just as good edited in a
traditional way, then it's probably not the best idea you can come up with. Be bold. Be fearless. That's what we want to see.
The closing date for entries is the 1st May 2006, and the entry fee is £5 per film submitted. Once the closing date has passed, all films will be viewed
by a panel of judges, who will draw up the shortlist of films that will go forward to the final competition screenings later in June 2006. We had more than
50 films entered last year, and we're looking to top that this year.
As ever we'll be pushing the boat out with our spectacular competition prizes, and we'll be inviting another panel of professionals to pick the winning films
- and of course, the roughcut audience will get to choose their favourite too. We're also hoping to enter the best films into this year's Cornwall Film Festival
and the Brief Encounters Short Film Festival in Bristol, and hopefully some might also be considered for inclusion in Future Shorts, a worldwide film network with
which o-region is affiliated.
